Ladders are one of the most commonly used tools in the workplace. With few moving parts, you’d think they would not be dangerous. However, when misused or abused, they can be deadly. Although falls due to defective or misused ladders are the primary cause of death and injuries, some of these falls are due to contact with power lines. Therefore, be aware of your surroundings when using ladders.

One of the easiest ways to help ensure safety in the workplace and at home is to keep all walkways and emergency exits clear and free of obstructions. Unfortunately, it is not hard to find catastrophic examples with loss of life due to blocked emergency exits. It is not uncommon to find emergency exits either locked or blocked from the outside during safety inspections. Even holiday decorations have been found to block or hide emergency exits.

Proper location and maintenance of eyewash stations can save an employee’s eyesight in the case of chemical exposure. The duration of contact and the chemical determines the severity of damage done to the eye. The quicker the chemical can be removed or diluted, the less damage that will occur. If the eyewash station is not functioning correctly or not easily accessible, blindness may be the outcome.
